Tulum Centro's Michelin Table Sits on Avenida Satélite, Not the Beach Road

  • October 29, 2026

Where does someone in downtown Tulum book a Michelin Guide dinner when visitors come to town? Most people would assume it means a drive down the Boca Paila road with a $$$$ check at the end. Going by the guide's own map, the nearer answer is a few blocks off Avenida Tulum.

The Michelin Guide's Tulum page lists eight restaurants. Two hold the Bib Gourmand, the guide's award for good cooking at moderate prices. The other six are Selected Restaurants, and Tulum has no Star or Green Star. Plot those eight addresses and a clear pattern appears. Five of the six higher-priced picks are along the coast, and both value picks are on the town side. The only one inside Centro comes from the same chef who runs one of the most expensive tables on the beach.

Eight Restaurants, Two Directions From Downtown

Here is the current Tulum list, with each address as Michelin gives it.

Restaurant Michelin distinction Price Address as Michelin lists it Area
Mestixa Bib Gourmand $$ Avenida Satélite S/N Tulum Centro
Cetli Bib Gourmand $$ Carr. Tulum-Coba Km. 2.5, Villas Tulum Cobá road, just outside town
ARCA Selected $$$$ Carr. Boca Paila Km. 7.6 Beach road
Hartwood Selected $$$$ Carr. Tulum-Boca Paila 7-6 km Beach road
Casa Banana Selected $$$ Tulum-Boca Paila Km. 7.5 Beach road
NÜ Tulum Selected $$$ NEST Tulum, Tulum-Boca Paila Km. 8.7 Beach road
Wild Selected $$$ Boca Paila Carretera Tulum Km. 10 Beach road
Autor Selected $$$$ Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya, Tulkal Chemuyil Resort, north of town

All six Selected restaurants are priced at $$$ or $$$$. Five of them sit between Km 7.5 and Km 10 on the beach road, and Autor is inside a resort north of town. Both $$ listings are on the town side. Taken as a whole, Tulum's Michelin list matches the town's split. The coast and one resort get the destination dinners, and town gets the restaurants Michelin recognized partly for price.

The pattern also matters at the state level. Heraldo de México Quintana Roo reported that Quintana Roo's 2026 selection has three starred restaurants, four Bib Gourmands and twelve recommendations. That puts two of the state's four Bib Gourmands within a short drive of Avenida Tulum.

One Chef, Two Price Points

Mestixa's chef explains the pattern better than the table does. José Luis Hinostroza leads ARCA, the live-fire restaurant at Km 7.6 that Michelin lists at $$$$. The guide says ARCA's menu changes often and follows its suppliers, and it mentions dishes such as seared octopus with xcatic salsa and a mamey brûlée. Eater's Tulum guide calls ARCA Hinostroza's flagship and Mestixa his other Tulum restaurant.

Michelin describes Mestixa as "Chef Hinostroza's second restaurant" and says it has an "intimate" room. A snake mural and traditional lighting set up the Asian-Mexican fusion menu. According to Mestixa's own site, the restaurant opened in Tulum in August 2020. It describes the concept as Asian and Mexican street food, much of it meant to be eaten by hand, a habit the two street-food cultures share. The same site says Hinostroza is from Southern California and grew up in a Mexican household. Hinostroza is credited as the creative lead, Daniken Ramón de Hoyos runs the kitchen as executive chef, and María José Cruz runs the bar.

Michelin's inspectors highlighted three dishes:

  • The bao, stuffed with pickled pear, hoja santa, pickled cucumber and cashew macha sauce.
  • The birria ramen, made with egg noodles, beef shank, cascabel chili and tamarind. Michelin calls it generously sized and says few dishes define the cuisine as well.
  • The waffle taco, filled with yuzu parfait, dried plum and caramelized white chocolate.

The guide puts ARCA and Mestixa in different categories and different price brackets. In practice, someone who lives in Centro can try this chef's cooking at $$ without driving to the coast.

Mestixa's distinction is also not new. Michelin's 2024 Bib Gourmand roundup named both Mestixa and Cetli among Quintana Roo's picks, the first year Mexico had its own Michelin Guide. Michelin named both again in its 2026 Bib Gourmand article, dated May 20, 2026. El Universal listed the same two Tulum Bib Gourmands in its ceremony coverage.

The Other Town-Side Pick, on the Road to Cobá

Cetli is the second Bib Gourmand. It sits at Km 2.5 on the Tulum–Cobá road in Villas Tulum, outside Centro but much closer to it than any beach-road listing. Michelin places it "just outside the city and the tourist hustle and bustle," on the road to the Cobá ruins.

The two Bib Gourmands have little in common beyond price. Mestixa cooks hand-held fusion food. Michelin describes Cetli's room as white walls hung with colorful paintings and antiques, with wooden tables and chairs, and its cooking as generous and centered on meat and fish. The inspectors single out the istak, a fish fillet cooked in seawater and covered in a white almond mole, served with dark chocolate sauce and sesame. They also name the nimbe, a vanilla and chocolate pancake filled with ice cream. Eater names Claudia Pérez Rivas as Cetli's chef and describes her cooking as inspired by Puebla, her home state, with moles cooked in an older style of Mexican haute cuisine.

The two restaurants can cover two different evenings for guests. Mestixa is a short walk from Avenida Tulum. Cetli is a quick drive out the Cobá road to a kitchen working in the Puebla mole tradition.

The Plaques Were Handed Out a Few Miles From Centro

The 2026 plaques were presented locally. Heraldo de México Quintana Roo reported that 19 Michelin plaques went to restaurants across the state at a ceremony in the Museo Regional de la Costa Oriental, inside Parque del Jaguar. Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa and Tulum municipal president Diego Castañón Trejo attended. The same report says Tulum now has more recognized restaurants than any other municipality in Quintana Roo.

The same day, Heraldo reported, the state's gastronomy promotion committee met in Tulum and declared Quintana Roo's cuisine part of the state's intangible heritage. A decree also set August 28 as the Día Estatal de la Gastronomía Quintanarroense, the state's annual gastronomy day. August 28 will come around again next summer, and the two Bib Gourmands are the obvious places on the town side to mark it.

Booking Before You Go

Michelin's listings say both restaurants handle their own bookings, so the guide's site can't reserve a table at either one. Some practical details for planning a visit:

  • Mestixa's own booking channel is the "Book your table" WhatsApp link on its website, which goes to +52 984 182 7283. Michelin's page lists a different number, +52 984 308 1154, so the site's link is the more direct route.
  • Mestixa's location is on Avenida Satélite between Avenida Tulum and Calle Polar Poniente.
  • Mestixa's hours differ from one listing to the next, so check on WhatsApp before you go, especially for an early dinner.
  • Cetli's phone number on Michelin's listing is +52 984 108 0681. Michelin's listed hours show it closed on Wednesdays, so call ahead before planning a midweek dinner around it.

From Centro, the two Tulum restaurants Michelin recognized for both quality and price are a short walk down Avenida Satélite and a short drive out the Cobá road.
