A New Comprehensive Sargassum Strategy for the Mexican Caribbean

Mexico and the State of Quintana Roo have announced a new comprehensive strategy to address sargassum across the Mexican Caribbean. The plan includes additional offshore collection vessels, expanded containment barriers, strengthened monitoring systems and closer coordination among the Mexican Navy, tourism authorities, municipalities and the private sector.

In Tulum, municipal beach-cleaning operations and resources for the collection, transportation and responsible disposal of sargassum are already in place. The broader strategy aims to intercept more of the seaweed before it reaches the shoreline, helping protect beaches, coastal ecosystems and the overall visitor experience.

From Seasonal Response to Long-Term Management

One of the most significant elements of the plan is the transition toward a circular-economy model.

Rather than treating sargassum exclusively as waste, public institutions, universities and private companies are exploring ways to transform it into clean energy and useful materials. Proposed applications include bioenergy, biogas, construction materials, asphalt mixtures, pavements, sidewalks and other commercial products.

Quintana Roo is also advancing plans for a specialized circular-economy center where collected sargassum could be processed, researched and converted into new resources. This approach could reduce the environmental impact associated with its disposal while encouraging innovation, investment and the development of a new sustainable industry in the region.
